The Silmarillion, or Quenta Silmarillion, is a history of Tolkien's Middle Earth. It begins with the formation of the world, when Ilvutar made the Ainuar and the world. It tells of Melkor's fall, of the formation of nature and the war the Valar went through to keep living creatures in the world. It tells of the forming of the dwarves by Aüle, the coming of the Elves and of Men; we also learn of the coming of Elves to Valinor, of the Sundering; the fall of Numenor, the forging of the great rings. The War of the Ring is also found here, among the vast history of Middle Earth and the many myths and side stories that make up the fabric of one of the most beloved realms of fiction.
