This is the First book in the Millenium series.
This book begins with the main character, Mikael Bloomkvist in the middle of the Wernnerström affair. After accusing Wernnerström of embezzlement. After taking him to court, Mikael gets sentenced to 3 months in jail. Mikael's newspaper, Millennium, is in danger of going under during his absence, but he leaves in the capable hands of his partner, Erika Berger.
But before Mikael is scheduled to serve his sentence, Henrik Vanger of the powerful Vanger Corperation, comes to him with a proposition. He offers Mikael financial stability and a partnership between the Vangers and Millennium, granting Millennium financial stability as well. All Mikael had to do was find out what happened to Harriet Vanger, Henrik's long lost niece who vanished during a family get together. Henrik believes it was one of the family members, and wants Mikael to find out who it was.
