Backstory

The Hunger Games is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which there are 13 districts which (for the most part) are very poor. The Capitol is pretty much the opposite of the districts. Even with all its riches, the Capitol relies on the districts for supplies and resources. After some time of this treatment, the districts revolted and then there was full out war between the Capitol and districts. In the end, the Capitol was victorious and to prove their dominance, they blew up District 13. Ever since, the Capitol has held the Hunger Games in which each district send one boy and one girl tribute to fight to the death every year as a reminder of the Capitol's power. The winner is given riches beyond their wildest dreams and the losers... well, they swim with the fishes.

Where our story begins...

The story starts 74 years after the war finished in District 12 (the coal miner's district). The protagonist is Katniss Everdeen, who has to provide for her family since her father died in an explosion. She and her friend, Gale, constantly go out of their district's bounds to hunt for food. All is normal until the Reaping, when Katniss' younger sister is selected to compete in the Games. Katniss selflessly takes her sister's place, knowing well that she might die. The male tribute, Peeta Mellark, has a secret crush on Katniss which he does not reveal until later. When tributes are transported to the Capitol, they get the royal treatment before they are prettied up and sent to the arena to kill themselves. Read the book to find out more...
